Fairtrade and Local Produce
2005 was Make Poverty History year, a concerted campaign in support of the 8 Millennium Goals designed to reduce poverty and inequality and to support fairer trading practices. Following the public meeting in Axbridge on 3rd December last year, ‘HelpMPH’ is a way of continuing to support the Millennium Goals by working together across the Cheddar Valley area.  Axbridge Town Council has declared its support for the Fairtrade vision and Axbridge been awarded Fairtrade status (see News for more information).

One of HelpMPH’s first objectives is to promote the Cheddar Valley as a Fairtrade Area, linking this to the support and promotion of locally produced products.  Conversations about Fairtrade continue with Cheddar and Wedmore; if you would like information about Fairtrade, please email hmph@cheddarvalley.com 

Fairtrade Box Scheme

A box scheme for Fairtrade produce is available in Axbridge and Wedmore and details can be found by clicking the Price List.  A Fairtrade Stall is also part of Axbridge’s monthly Farmer’s Market and dates and details can be found on the Town Council website (www.axbridge-tc.gov.uk/diary.html ) and Somerset Farmers Markets (www.sfmdirect.co.uk/markets/ ).

This Website
The purpose of this website is to promote Fairtrade, local produce and charitable activities in the Cheddar Valley area.  One of the examples of last year’s initiative is Axbridge First School’s success in collecting to ‘Send a Cow’ (www.sendacow.com ).

Through the local Chamber of Commerce, Axbridge is starting a Slow Food Convivium, supporting the introduction of local produce into outlets at Bristol International Airport and exploring the possibilities if the airport becoming Britain’s first Fairtrade Airport.  It you are involved in activities in the Cheddar Valley area that support Fairtrade and local produce and would like to link with our activities, do contact us.
